It seemed like we weren't going to have a winter at all until well into February this year. Now we are looking at the first day of spring and it is still thirty-something degrees outside. I am ready for the weather to warm up and the bulbs to bloom. I've been wanting to get out and take photos at the dog park and fountains around town, but for now I'll have to make do with photos and tabletop scenes to paint from.
Here's my latest, which is up for auction at
Daily Paintworks. Hydrangeas are probably my third favorite flower. I love the range of colors found in each … whatever you call the big round things with all the little blooms on them. The number one and two spots are ranunculus and peonies. They both seem so abundant, bursting with layers of lush color and softness. Tulips compete with hydrangea for the third spot. I like their simply oval form and vivid color.
The flower I respect the most is the sunflower, and not just because it's the Kansas flower. I'm amazed at how the thin stalk holds up the weight of the huge sunflower head with all of its seeds, always pointing at the sun. It's a symbol of strength and optimism for me. Maybe I should paint one soon. I'll need both qualities as I build my career as an artist, but it will surely be worth it.
